Laser capsulotomy

Laser capsulotomy is a short, painless procedure performed for patients who have previously had cataract surgery and have developed clouding of the posterior lens capsule.

When is it needed?

During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed, and the artificial intraocular lens is left in the capsule that surrounded it. In some patients, months or years after the operation, this posterior capsule may gradually become cloudy - a condition known as secondary cataract. Vision becomes blurred again, glare increases, and the experience is similar to the return of a cataract.

Secondary cataract is a common and expected occurrence - it is not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is resolved simply and quickly with a laser.

How is it performed?

The pupils are dilated with drops before the procedure. The patient sits in front of the laser while the doctor places a special contact lens on the eye. The NdYAG laser then precisely creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule, restoring a clear visual path. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic drops - no incision, no sutures, no pain.

Milmedic Clinic has the latest generation NdYAG laser for anterior segment procedures.

What to expect?

Vision improvement occurs immediately or within the first day. After the procedure, you may temporarily see flashes or dark floaters - this is normal and resolves quickly. A follow-up appointment a few days after the procedure is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Can secondary cataract recur?

No - the opening created by the laser is permanent and the capsule cannot cloud over again. The procedure is performed only once on that eye.

Can the laser damage the artificial lens?

The NdYAG laser is precisely calibrated and directed exclusively at the cloudy capsule behind the lens, not at the lens itself. The artificial implant remains untouched.

Is the laser safe if I have glaucoma?

Laser capsulotomy can temporarily raise intraocular pressure immediately after the procedure, which is particularly important to monitor in patients with glaucoma. Your doctor must be aware of your diagnosis; in that case, pressure is checked immediately after the procedure and appropriate therapy is applied if needed.

Clear vision should not be temporary.

If clouding returns after cataract surgery, laser capsulotomy offers a fast and safe solution.
