Silicone oil removal
Silicone oil removal is a surgical procedure in which oil is removed from the interior of the eye after it has served its purpose as a temporary retinal tamponade. Silicone oil is used during vitrectomy in the most severe cases of retinal detachment and proliferative disease; unlike gas and air, it is not naturally absorbed and therefore needs to be surgically removed afterwards.

When is the oil removed?
Removal is planned at least three months after vitrectomy - under standard conditions, this is sufficient time for the retina to stabilise and heal. The exact timing is decided by the vitreoretinal surgeon based on follow-up examinations and the state of the retina.
While silicone oil is in the eye, vision is blurred because the oil shifts the refraction towards plus. After removal, the refraction gradually normalises.
How is it performed?
The procedure is performed using the same micro-invasive approach as vitrectomy, through tiny self-sealing openings in the sclera that close without suturing. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia as day-case surgery, and the patient goes home the same day.
What to expect?
Recovery is generally faster than after primary vitrectomy. Vision gradually clears in the days and weeks following the procedure. Follow-up appointments are required the next day, and thereafter as agreed with the surgeon.
Silicone oil removal at Milmedic Clinic is performed by an experienced team of vitreoretinal surgeons led by Prof. Dr Miroslav Vukosavljević and Dr Nenad Petrović.
Frequently asked questions
Is silicone oil removal always necessary, or can the oil remain in the eye permanently?
Silicone oil is not intended as a permanent solution - in the eye it causes refractive changes and over time can lead to complications such as cataract or raised intraocular pressure. Removal is planned once the retina has sufficiently stabilised, and the decision is made by the surgeon based on follow-up findings.
Do I need to bring someone with me to the procedure?
Yes, after the procedure the eye will be covered for safety reasons until the mandatory follow-up the next day, so bringing a companion is essential.
